<b>DAKAR-THEMED HILUX:</b> Fans of the Dakar Rally and SA’s most popular bakkie can have the best of both worlds with the limited edition Hilux Dakar Edition. <i>Image: Toyota</i>

In July 2013 Wheels24 reported on the launch of Toyota's Dakar-styled Hilux ahead of the 2014 Dakar Rally.
Now, April 2014, Toyota has once again launched a limited-edition Dakar-themed Hilux, this time in celebration of drivers Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz achieving fourth in the world's toughest 4x4 race.

The celebratory Hilux has a choice of three engines for all body styles (single cab, Extra and Double Cab) and sports a host of exterior and interior upgrades at a R20 000 - R24 000 premium compared to standard versions.
The Dakar edition has stainless-steel nudge and styling (roll-over) bars, matching side steps and a rear step-up bumper with towball. It has unique grey 17” alloy rims, a matt black tonneau cover and colour-coded (as opposed to chromed) external mirrors and door releases as well as Dakar badging.

A reversing camera is standard on all three and four-litre Double Cab models (Raider and Dakar variants) as well as the Extra Cab Dakar Editions.
Inside, it there is leather with black and red stitching. The limited edition adds

The 2014 Dakar Edition, the second run in the current generation Hilux, will be produced from April through June (depending on its popularity). How popular are the Dakar-theme bakkies? Toyota SA reports that the 2013 edition sold out in "two and a half months".
