DS3 Racing takes WRC on streets

Converting its runaway success in the World Rally championship into a road-going racer must have been a blast for Citroen.

The French automaker has unleashed a special edition DS3 with a serious sporting pedigree but limited its numbers to 1000 worldwide - and of those South Africa will get only 10.

The car, based on the range-topping DS3 Sport THP 150, has been modified and hand-finished by the Citroen Racing Team in the team’s rally workshop and the DS3 Racing has parts developed to racing specifications.

And if you thought the DS3 looked the business, you’d better watch out this time around.

Citroen’s four-cylinder 1.6 turbo engine has been tuned to produce 152kW/275Nm, up significantly on the standard DS3’s already entertaining 115kW/240Nm. With the uprated engine, the DS3 Racing is able to sprint to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and reach 235kph, Citroen claims. This thanks to modifying the powertrain components, rejigging the turbo and adjusting the engine control unit mapping.

WITH LOVE, CITROEN RACING

A special tailpipe and silencer box were added to create an auditory experience to match the driving experience,

The DS3 has undergone a number of updates to make the driving experience that much more pleasurable. Its steering is more precise with a control system adapted for the DS3 Racing’s new tyres. Stiffer springs, revised front and rear shocks, tracks wider by 30mm at the front and rear and a ride height down by 15mm should all contribute to more switched-on driving dynamics.

To match the increased performance, the car’s brakes have been updated with four-piston racing callipers rear drilled discs. ESP has been tweaked to deal with the DS3 Racing’s sportier characteristics but it can be switched off for track days.

SHOCKING

To ensure this DS3 never fades into the background, the obsidian black body has contrasting bright-orange paint on the  roof, external mirrors, brake calipers, 18" alloy rims and grille border. A sporty carbon finish has been used around the front bumper and lower body trim and chromed door releases and a chrome-finished exhaust complete the athletic styling.

Carbon trim adorns the fascia, centre console, steering wheel, armrests and door mouldings but the orange flavour continues in the cabin with the dash’s glossy strip, gear shifter and its base finished in the same bright tone. The sports seats, embossed with “Citroen Racing”, have orange inserts.

The R399 900 sticker price includes a four-year or 60 000km service plan, three-year or 100 000km warranty and three years of roadside assistance.

FreeDrive (Citroen’s warranty extension to five years or 100 000km plus a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan) costs R19 464. A warranty extension to five years or 100 000km, which includes an extension of the service plan to five years or 100 000km, costs R10 782.
