While South Africa missed out on the Renault Clio RS's first rotation local hot-hatch fans were quick to catch on when the second generation Clio RS touched down here in 1999.

Eleven years on, the automaker has released a special edition model to celebrate the little car with the big heart’s 20th birthday.

It's kitted with new trim, a higher level of specification and different paintwork and special '20th' badging is visible on the special edition's door pillars.

The Deep Black finish added to the roof, upper hatch rail and front lip spoiler contrasts beautifully with the car's Pearlescent White body. The high-gloss black finish is continued for the front bumper and rear diffuser, while the wing mirrors and front splitter are finished in grey.

The cabin features satin chrome and aluminium accents, perforated leather steering wheel and a very yellow rev counter with an audiovisual gearshift indicator. The interior is finished in silver and grey cloth.

Never mind the bare-bones approach for this scorching hot hatch. Standard features include TomTom navigation, cruise control with speed limiter, light and rain sensors, electric folding mirrors, cornering headlights, climate control, Bluetooth and Renault’s smart-card key.

RS safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes with EBD, ESP (that can be disengaged) and traction control. Furthermore, the Clio RS Special Edition is fitted with stylish black 17", 12-spoked alloy rims that partially conceal the red Brembo brake callipers.

Nothing much has changed beneath the metal of this Clio RS. It's still powered by the feisty two-litre, quad-valve with 147kW and 215Nm on tap at 7100 and 5400rpm, respectively.

It is able to power to a top speed of 225km/h, driving through a six-speed manual transmission.

Xavier Gobille, managing director of Renault SA, said: "This special-edition model takes all that is great about the RS in terms of class-leading performance, handling and driving involvement and combines it with a unique colour scheme and specification level that makes it a true, highly-prized collector's item."
