Volkswagen SA's hugely popular Polo Vivo will gain a sporty derivative with the introduction of a GT version. Got an extra five grand?
Under the bonnet will be a 77kW/155Nm, 1.6 engine and a simple five-speed gearbox which together, VW says, will hurl the little car to 100km/h from parked in about 11 seconds. More important in the real world will be its fuel consumption: VW claims 6.6/100... Others might think the lowered suspension more important.
The Vivo GT will also have anti-lock brakes, power windows, radio/CD with four speakers, theft alarm and central locking with remote-controlled activation - just like the plain 1.6. So to set itself apart from its siblings the GT will have GT badges on its grille and boot door, a spoiler and chromed twin exhausts.
SPORTY INTERIOR
Comfort items for the GT include sport seats, a three-spoked steering wheel, silver fascia panels and red stitching on the gear lever and handbrake. Colour choice is simple and very CitiGolf-recalling... you can have black, white, red or silver.
Compared to the current 1.6-litre Trendline model you're essentially getting a body kit and sporty interior extras, for R5000 more.
Price: Volkswagen Polo Vivo GT 1.6 - R155 320 (standard 1.6 Trendline - R150 320), including a three-year or 120 000km warranty and a six-year anti-rust through warranty. Service plan an option. Service intervals 15 000km.
