Luxury automaker Rolls-Royce revealed the latest incarnation of its flagship Phantom at the 2012 Geneva auto show. Launched in 2003, the Phantom Series I has served the automaker well in reviving the brand and since then several variants of the sedan have been created.
The Phantom series II has the brand's pinnacle family of vehicles in the form of the sedan, coupe, drophead coupe and long-wheelbase variants. The Phantom's 6.75 V12 engine gets a minor tweak with power increased by 5kW to 343kW while torque remains at 720Nm.
The models sport a new auto transmission, rear differential and several interior and exterior changes. Phantom Series II hopes to reinforce the automaker's reputation for luxury vehicles.
'TIMELESS APPEAL'
A new eight-speed auto and rear differential has been added and, according to Rolls-Royce, fuel consumption has been reduced by 10% on the combined cycle.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce, said: “From launch in 2003, the Rolls-Royce Phantom established itself as the benchmark in automotive luxury, a reputation it has held ever since”
“These cars are timeless in their appeal but technology moves rapidly and we cannot afford to stand still. I am delighted to present Phantom Series II, a family of models that feature significant improvements in design, drive train and technology. As a consequence of these changes, we will continue to present with pride the best cars in the world, which reconfirm Rolls-Royce’s position at the pinnacle of the ultra-luxury market."
Rolls-Royce director of design, Ian Cameron, likens the evolution of the Phantom Series II design to "a familiar theme, lit in a different way”. The new models' striking front benefits from diode lighting, re-styled bumpers and rectangular light apertures. The headlights can swivel depending on the direction of travel - particularly useful when cornering. Adaptive headlights also adjust the cone of light projected according to road speed.
The Phantom II series cabin has a redesigned multi-media interface with a larger 22cm display and an improved satnav system. A 360 degree camera system keeps track of the whole car when reversing.
