New Toyota Auris: More details
The Toyota Auris has just gone on sale in Japan (we brought you the early details on Monday), but will make its global debut at the Paris auto show in September. It is a car, Toyota said, that will be better styled, have higher equipment levels and also “be cheaper to run”.
The all-new Auris has a sexy new exterior design and a cabin that is said to have higher quality finishes than the model it replaces.
IN A FAMILY WAY
The latest Toyota has also adopted the new family face (seen in the design of the 86 sports coupe, just launched in South Africa) with its narrower grille, sharpened light clusters and LED daytime running lights.
At the rear the new Auris has a tailgate that opens wider, a wrap-around light cluster and a bold new bumper design.
The interior is bigger – there’s extra knee room and more space in the boot – but one of Toyota’s big talking points is Skyview, said to be “one of the largest panoramic roofs in the segment”.
Toyota is also said to have paid attention to other elements of the cabin through its use of lights, colours and finishes. Satin silver finishes are used for the air vent and meter surrounds, centre console and transmission tunnel, while models (depending on the spec level) will have either fabric or leather trim to go with other “soft-touch” materials throughout the interior.
Luggage space is 360 litres across the range – the battery pack beneath the hybrid versions rear seat has been repositioned to give it the same load capacity as its siblings.
Driving dynamics have also been improved; the overall ride height is 55mm less than the current model, resulting in a lower driving position and centre of gravity. The Auris’ aerodynamic drag coefficient is Cd 0.28.
It also weighs less (up to 40kg, depending in the version) but the greater use of high tensile steel has also contributed to a 10% increase in the Auris’ body stiffness.
Powertrains available in Europe include 1.4-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engines along with a full hybrid version.
The all-new Auris will be launched in South Africa in early 2013. More detail specific to the local models will become available then.
