Mini will be hitting the 2012 Geneva auto show with a bang as it prepares to strip the covers off the race-ready John Cooper Works Countryman model with its sizzling 160kW engine.

While Wheels24 has already reported on the new concept and special edition models that will be showcased the automaker’s 2012 Geneva auto show stand, it appears Mini has saved the most thrilling for last.

The athletic Mini John Cooper Works Countryman is powered by the latest version of BMW’s 1.6, four-cylinder engine with a twin-scroll turbo, direct injection and variable valve control, to generate 160kW/280Nm.

Another welcome addition is the always-fun overboost function that pops the peak torque output to 300Nm.

NUMBER SIX

The sixth JCW model in the current Mini range is able to accelerate to 100km/h in seven seconds and its top speed is a claimed 225km/h for the six-speed manual.

SPORTING CHANCE: The cabin of the John Cooper Works Countryman is distinguished by special sports equipment - you might also notice the red detailing.

The JCW comes standard with a beefy aerodynamic kit featuring a lowered sports suspension and 18” alloy rims, dynamic stability control and traction control.

Apart from being the first Mini performance model to come with all-wheel drive, it will also be the first to come with an optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Standard cabin equipment includes snug sports seats, a sports steering wheel and “model-specific displays and controls”.

The Mini Countryman JCW is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of 2012.
