Better late than never? Ford has at last released its Kuga junior SUV in South Africa.
Launched in Europe in 2008, the Kuga has finally made its way to South Africa to take on other baby SUVs such as VW’s Tiguan and Hyundai's ix35.
The Kuga, which was introduced to South Africa at the recent Johannesburg international auto show, shows off the current Ford design identity although it is intended to be practical, too.
Kuga has a split tailgate for easy loading of lightweight and bulky items, four D-ring tether points, underseat storage beneath the second row and seats that fold and tumble forward when extra space is required. A rear tonneau cover (with a “one-touch” function) keeps your valuables out of sight to prying eyes.
POWER TALK
South African Kuga owners have the run of Ford’s 2.5-litre Duratec turbocharged petrol engine mated to a Durashift five-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates 147kW at 6000rpm and peak torque of 320Nm available from 1600 to 4000rpm.
Ford quotes fuel consumption on the combined cycle of 10.3 litres/100km with average CO2 emissions of 244g/km.
Kuga is fitted with an intelligent all-wheel drive system that apportions the bulk of its torque to the rear wheels to keep the fuel consumption presentable while enabling the best traction in various conditions.
Ford’s latest addition comes standard with ABS with EBD, ESP, EBA and anti-rollover mitigation.
It is also fitted with a range of state-of-the-art features including push start ignition, cruise control, Bluetooth with voice control, full leather trim, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat.
Additional features, depending on the specification level, include climate control, rear parking sensors and a panoramic glass roof.
PRICES:
Kuga 2.5 Turbo Trend AWD Auto - R375 000
Kuga 2.5 Turbo Titanium AWD Auto - R395 000
Prices include a four-year or 120 000km warranty, a four-year or 80 000km service plan and roadside assistance for three years. Service intervals are at 20 000km.
