Facelifted Z4 debuts in China

BMW debuts its facelifted Z4 at the 2013 Shanghai auto show  sporting a new design, tweaked interior and a new Design Pure Traction package.

The optional BMW Individual hardtop – available in two contrast colours: Black non-metallic and Glacier Silver metallic – provides a feast for the eyes when the roof is closed. The hardtop can be opened at the touch of a button while the car is moving at up to 40km/h in 19 seconds.

The model has exterior design tweaks such as new headlights, tapered indicators, new colours and light-alloys. The model can be kitted out with the new M Sport package.

A total of 11 colours are available including a new metallic range. The Design Pure Traction option sees the roadster decked out in a black and orange colour-scheme. If you’re not keen on a black/orange roadster, you can specify any other colour combination.

New interior additions include black surrounds for the central air vents and the iDrive control system’s folding control display, which comes as part of the optional Professional navigation system.

Wood trim has been added to the selection of interior trim strips available as an option for the new Z4.

The BMW Z4 sDrive28i, BMW Z4 sDrive35i and BMW Z4 sDrive35is are offered with Kansas leather trim, which is available as an option for the two other models.

New variants have been added to the range of optional light-alloys, including 17” and 18” rims in V-spoke design, both of which will be combined with mixed tyres.

M SPORT PACK

The new M Sport package adds performance suspension, 18”  light-alloys and an aerodynamics kit with large air intakes in the front and a rear bumper. The interior benefits from sport seats, a M leather steering wheel, driver’s footrest, door sill finishers and roof liner. The new Z4 sDrive35is comes as standard with a model-specific version of the M Sport package.

ENGINES

The new Z4 will be launched with a larger, five-strong line-up of petrol engines with a choice of three four-cylinder and two six-cylinder units.
The entry level sDrive18i is powered by a four-cylinder, two-litre capable of 115kW at 5000 rpm and 240Nm between 1250 and 4400rpm. Mated to a six-speed manual as standard, the sDrive18i can be fitted with optional eight-speed auto.

The model accelerates from 0 - 100km/h in 7.9 seconds (8.1 in auto guise) and reaches a top speed of 221km/h (220 km/h). Fuel consumption is rated at 6.8 litres/100km on both transmissions and CO2 emissions are 159g/km.

BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology package for the new sDrive18i includes twin-scroll turbocharging, high precision direct petrol injection, variable valve control and continuously variable camshaft control.

The technology package is also used in the sDrive20i and sDrive28i. These engines can also be ordered with an eight-speed auto with shift paddles.

The existing engine variants, the sDrive20i, sDrive28i, sDrive35i and sDrive35is, retain their places in the range.

STANDARD KIT

Using the Driving Experience Control (DEC) switch, drivers can select up to three modes – comfort, sport and sport+.

Standard kit includes xenon headlights, air conditioning, heated rear window, automatic boot closing and runflat tyres with a run-flat indicator.
BMW’s Business radio, which includes a CD player, AUX and six speakers, is a standard in all Z4 variants. Customers can also choose from options including the BMW Professional radio and the Professional hi-fi-system with 14 speakers.

The similarly optional Professional navigation system enables high-resolution 3D maps on the 22.3cm iDrive monitor.

BMW has expanded the driver assistance and mobility services of its ConnectedDrive with features such as a rain sensor, adaptive Headlights and high beam assist. Cruise control and parking distance control are also available
