Budget Fortuner goes with auto

Toyota has added an entry-level four-speed auto gearbox to its Fortuner SUV line-up.

The new 2.5 D-4D auto slots in just above the 2.5 D-4D manual (autos are always more expensive than stick-shifts), the latter the most affordable entry point for Fortuner ownership.

At the heart of the Fortuner 2.5 D-4D VNT auto is a sophisticated engine (also just added to the Hilux bakkie range) able to deliver expressive performance for a four-cylinder engine. Maximum power is 106kW, maximum torque about the same as the three-litre D-4D at 343Nm and available from 1600rpm.

'GREAT VALUE'

The Fortuner is one of South Africa's most popular SUV models and top in its segment. Toyota also claims it is the best-selling privately bought vehicle in the country and had a radical cosmetic rework in 2011 "that made it an even more good-looking vehicle".

"However," the automaker adds, "great value for money and legendary off-road ability remain the pillars of the Fortuner range. Add seven-seater versatility, an 80-litre fuel tank and a five-year or 90 000km service plan and you have an unbeatable, go-anywhere family package."

Toyota believes the addition of the auto transmission will make the 2.5 D-4D even more popular.
