PURELY FOR FUN: The 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder will be shown at the New York show - but you can order one in SA now. Image: Porsche
Porsche is celebrating the start of the (northern) 2015 convertible season with the global premiere of its latest Boxster Spyder, a pure sports car, at the New York International Auto Show.
The new range-topping Boxster, the automaker says, has "kept the independent character of the previous Spyder, which has already attained cult status".
For example, it adds, the classic fabric roof is still not power-operated and the car is available with only a manual transmission.
"As a true original roadster," Porsche says, "the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports-car driving experience but with contemporary performance - firm sport suspension with a 20mm lower ride height, powerful brakes from the 911 Carrera, more direct steering, and a 3.8-litre flat-six engine capable of 280kW."
Helped by being the lightest Boxster yet, the car can reach 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and howl on to 288km/h. Driven more reasonably, the owner can expect around 9.9 litres/100km.
"The car's distinctive design," Porsche says, "includes visual elements that recall Porsche sports and race cars such as the 718 Spyder from the 1960's with its two prominent streamlined bulges along the long rear lid behind the head restraints."
The front and rear of the car, the automaker adds, are from the Cayman GT4.
The driver and passenger sit in light sport bucket seats with large bolsters; a new 360mm steering wheel "helps ensure the mid-engine roadster can be driven precisely and with great agility".
Being that this is a "purist's sports car", the standard specification in some markets will not include an audio system or aircon. Probably uniquely, however, audio can be ordered ex-factory at no extra cost - and that means any unit from the entire Boxster audio range!
Porsche South Africa, however, says units to be delivered here WILL include audio and aircon. You can order one now for delivery (probably) in August 2015 with the base price already listed - R1 010 000.
