While BMW's ActiveHybrid 5 was its first hybrid model to be introduced in South Africa (in May 2012), the ActiveHybrid 3 and 7 models will now also be offered in the country. Each of the cars fitted with what BMW calls its “intelligent” hybrid-drive systems uses an electric motor to run in tandem with a conventional internal combustion engine. PETROL-ELECTRIC HYBRIDSWhile the electric motor allows for battery-only travel up to four kilometres it, combined with the petrol engine, contributes to fuel savings and improves acceleration times, the automaker said.
