Germany - A new Audi sports car – called the R6 – could slot in between the TT and R8. It will compete against Porsche’s recently-launched 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman.
Rumors of a mini-R8 have been circulating ever since the automaker filed a trademark for the R6 moniker in 2012. AutoBild reports that if approved, the R6 will likely be previewed in 2017, though it won't make it to showrooms until 2018 at the earliest.
If the Audi R6 receives the greenlight it could reduce production costs of the Porsche 718; and in business it’s all about keeping production costs low and profits high.
The new sports car will be different from the Boxster/Cayman in that it will be powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, reports Autobild. Entry-level versions will be tuned to 210kW, mid-ranged variants 255kW and the range-topping flagship 300kW.
Based on a Porsche
Germany's AutoBild magazine reports that R6 is likely to share the same underpinnings as the aforementioned 718, with the Audi probably opting for Quattro all-wheel drive compared to the 718s RWD configuration.
Based on concept images it appears the R6 borrows design elements from the TT, R8 and the Audi Sport Quattro concept that was shown at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show.
