CAMPING PLEASURE: The new California Beach blends the camper idea with seats for up to seven.
Volkswagen is hoping folk will find endless summer fun with the announcement of the California Beach camper that uses the practicality and versatility of the Caravelle people-carrier.
Seating for up to seven people is available with a two or three-seat rear bench and optional individual chairs. The front seats swivel to face backwards and a table, neatly stored in the sliding side door, can create a sociable lounge area. Two folding chairs are stored in the tail door.
PULL-DOWN BLINDS
A large amount of luggage space is offered behind the seats and the California Beach also offers sleeping accommodation for four. The bench seat folds to convert to a double bed across the width of the vehicle, while a manual pop-up roof gives access to a further double bed.
Pull-down blinds cover the side and rear windows, plus pop-up covers for the front window ensure privacy.
PARK 'N SLEEP: VW's California Beach has seats for up to seven and sleeping quarters for four.
The California Beach is powered by a choice of two-litre TDI engines, including a new 85kW BlueMotion unit making its debut in the model and and promising more fuel-efficiency and lower emissions.
The camper range is fitted with 16" alloy rims, aircon and a CD/radio with eight speakers. Sunny Yellow exterior paint and Takato upholstery are exclusive to Beach models.
Options include larger alloy wheels, a 32-litre cooler/warming box, programmable parking heater, an awning, privacy glass, double glazing, Bluetooth and xenon headlights with diode daytime running lights.
The previous California Beach was sold to order in South Africa but that's not going to happen with this model. Pity.
