BMW's X3 range to double in size

BMW delivered on its promise made during the launch of the X3 in late 2010 by expanding the "junior X5’s" range of available engines.

Originally marketed only in xDrive20d (135kW/380Nm) and xDrive35i (225kW/400Nm) configuration, BMW will add two new engine derivatives by October 2011.

The new petrol is designated xDrive20i and produces 135kW and 270Nm from 2-litres of turbocharged capacity. To shore up efficiency it features a stop/start functionality and BMW’s usual range of EfficientDynamics engineering details such as on-demand ancillaries.

BIG HITTER SIX NOT FOR US

If you prefer your X3 with diesel power the new option will be xDrive30d. A characteristic six-in-line configuration, twin-turbochargers and 3-litre of capacity tally peak outputs of 190kW and 560Nm.

Criminally, though, BMW’s most sophisticated X3 diesel model, the xDrive35d (230kW/630Nm), will not be available to local buyers, which means South Africans will have to settle for the xDrive35i petrol (225kW/400Nm) as their most powerful X3 option.

The full X3 range by October 2011 will tally xDrive 20i (135kW/270Nm), xDrive20d (135kW/380Nm), xDrive35i (225kW/400Nm) and xDrive30d (190kW/560Nm).

All models will drive courtesy of ZF’s outstanding eight-speed automatic transmission.
