The next M3 is the first 3 Series model to get V8 power which will thrust out about 300 kW. So expect it to jet from 0-100 km/h in a fraction over five seconds, while top speed will obviously be limited to 250 km/h.
Insiders say that the new V8, which is derived from the M5's V10, will be more compact than the old in-line six cylinder unit. Thanks to a longer wheelbase too the M3 will feature good weight distribution.
Power will be fed to the rear wheels via a six speed manual gearbox or BMW's latest SMG transmission.
The car takes many cues from the M5, with twin-exit exhausts, front wing vents and "M" badges. Naturally this will result in a more aggressive look than the average 3 Series.
BMW will also launch the M3 in four-door, estate and cabrio guises.
