BMW 1 Series gets the M badge

ADVERTISING FEATURE

The letter M now comes to the BMW 1 Series to symbolize outstanding power delivery and the highly dynamic driving properties of a high-performance sports car.

In the stunning new BMW 1 Series M Coupé the technology of a high-performance car has been combined with the agility and lightness of a compact model to create a whole new dimension of sports-style driving pleasure.

UNMISTAKABLE M FEELING

With this two-door model, BMW M has realised for the first time in this vehicle class the concept of racing-orientated performance characteristics in a car developed for everyday use to extend the brand’s model range and pave the way for younger people to access the hallmark driving experience offered by an M car.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé embodies the unmistakable M feeling in a highly concentrated form. Its in-line six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo and petrol direct injection develops a maximum output of 250kW with an engine speed-orientated characteristic curve typical of BMW M cars.

With chassis technology derived directly from motor racing, a power-to-weight ratio reduced to 4.4kg/bhp and precisely optimised aerodynamic components - including innovative air curtains at the front - supreme conversion of superior propulsion power into thrilling driving dynamics has been guaranteed.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupéccelerates in 4.9sec from 0-100km/h and reaches 200km/h after 17.3sec. In the area of efficiency, too, it achieves top figures within its performance category. Its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 9.6 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 224g/km have been achieved.

PACKED POWER: There's a lot of engine under the bonnet of BMW 1 Series M Coupéand its good for 250kW and 250km/h.

The outstanding sporty flair of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is outwardly expressed by the athletic character of its body design. In the exclusively designed interior of the four-seater, high-quality materials and an M-specific cockpit create the ambience of a premium sports car.

In its standard configuration, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé displays the concept harmony so characteristic of M cars: it is able to cope with the extreme demands of a race track and the diverse challenges of everyday traffic. What’s more, individual preferences in terms of comfort, safety and infotainment can be fulfilled with a model-specific selection of equipment options that includes BMW ConnectedDrive.

Classic coupé proportions,
M-style aesthetic appeal

THE dynamic proportions with which the BMW 1 Series M Coupé proclaims a brand of driving pleasure unique within the competitive field provide the perfect foundation for the instantly fascinating appearance of the first high-performance model in the compact segment.

Measuring 4.380m in length and 1.420m in height, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is the both the shortest and the flattest model in the BMW M range. It is also 55mm wider than the BMW 135i Coupé at 1.803m - the result and the expression of a track width at the front and rear axle optimised to enhance driving dynamics in a way specific to this model.

The design of the front impressively reflects the outstanding performance capabilities of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. The powerfully shaped front apron forms a homogeneous surface, dominated in the lower section by three large air-intakes. In order to optimise the aerodynamic properties, so-called air curtains are used for the first time in a serial production vehicle.

Here’s how it works: the inflowing air is routed into two ducts through openings in the face of the front apron. These openings are designed so air flows along the inside of the front apron in a closed duct to the wheel arches and discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed, just passing the outer wheel flanks.

The escaping stream of air covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, reducing aerodynamically unfavourable turbulence around the wheel arches.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is fitted as standard with twin bi-xenon circular headlights characteristic of the brand, truncated in the upper section by an LED-fed positioning light. This is what creates the typical focused look of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

POWER PIPES: Big spoked alloy rims and fat tyres tell a story of the 1 Series M's potential - and so do the two pairs of exhaust pipes under the aerodynamic tail.

With the greenhouse conveying an impression of lightness, the powerfully distinctive shoulder line and the elaborately sculpted surfaces in profile symbolise precisely controllable athleticism. All four wheel-arches bulge boldly.

Another distinctive M feature is the chromed gill element adjacent to each front wheel-arch. Each bears both a turn indicator and an M brand logo, as well as forming the starting point for the bead line running past the door releases to the rear. A vertical contour edge starts at each gill and leads down to each sill.

Fine-tuning in a wind tunnel shaped the exterior mirrors whose basic shape matches that of the larger BMW M3.

The emphasised wheel arches also make the rear of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé seem especially broad; horizontal lines accentuate this impression.

A discreet spoiler lip on the boot lid generates additional downforce on the rear axle at high speed and the rear apron has side openings which echo the look of the front air-intakes while the characteristic M symmetry is created by chromed twin tailpipes, each positioned towards sides of the car. L-shaped rear light clusters with red glass covers create a characteristic night-time illumination.

Inside them, light is provided by two banks of light-emitting diodes.

The paint finishes - Alpine White non-metallic, Sapphire Black metallic and an exclusive Valencia Orange metallic are available for the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. The standard 19-inch M light alloy rims in a Y-spoked design provide perfect road contact and a striking appearance.

Six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower
Turbo and engine speed-related
performance characteristics

An in-line, three-litre, six-cylinder engine with outstanding performance, sensational free-revving properties and long-lasting thrust provides the BMW 1 Series M Coupé with its power for supreme driving dynamics. It combines hallmark M performance and contemporary efficiency to handle the requirements of city driving conditions and the race track.

The result: an engine output of 250kW that achieves almost exactly the level of the third-generation BMW M3 and the driving dynamics of a compact, top-flight automotive athlete clearly superior to the latter model which was replaced just a few years ago.

The M TwinPower Turbo technology used in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé consists of two relatively small superchargers which, because of their low inertia moment, are active even at low engine speeds, each feeding three cylinders with compressed air for an unusually spontaneous level of responsiveness.

The drivetrain provides its maximum torque of 450Nm from only 1500rpm to about 4500rpm, though this can be increased by 50Nm at full throttle by means of an overboost. The maximum of 500Nm permits highly dynamic acceleration and the forward thrust after each gearshift generates acceleration typical of M vehicles.

The engine reaches its maximum output at 5980rpm.

Such an engine speed-related performance curve embodies the characteristic M properties of high performance though the accelerative urge is limited to 250km/h by the engine control system.

The engine’s cooling system is designed to handle both the outstanding performance and the particularly high demands of constantly drawing on maximum power. An additional radiator and a specific air duct deal with the increased thermal stress generated by the demands of a race track.

The engine's outstanding efficiency is mainly due to direct fuel-injection which allows for high-precision fuel supply with piezo injectors placed centrally between the valves. In addition, BMW Efficient Dynamics measures such as brake energy regeneration and needs-based activation auxiliary equipment ensure that the average fuel consumption on the EU test cycle is limited to 9.6 litres/100km and CO2 emissions to 224g/km.

The transmission of propulsion power in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is taken care of by a six-speed manual transmission, a new gearbox with a very short M gearshift lever.

Chassis technology: low
weight, high rigidity

THE BMW 1 Series M Coupé has a chassis whose elements have run through the BMW M racing development process. Numerous key components originally conceived for the BMW M3 are in the compact, high-performance coupé though modified and adapted for this new model. In creating the vehicle set-up, a procedure which included test runs on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the interaction of the engine, chassis and body was optimised to create a characteristic, consistent overall set of properties taking into account the low vehicle weight of 1495kg.

The double-pivot front axle and the five-link rear axle of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé are almost entirely aluminium. Tubular stabilisers, forged aluminium axle links and aluminium shock-absorbers round off the lightweight suspension concept.

Standard: Variable M differential lock,
compound brakes, DSC with
M Dynamic Mode and Servotronic

THE BMW 1 Series M Coupé is fitted as standard with a variable M differential lock. This generates lock-up torque as required and completely variably up to 100%, to give optimum traction on all surfaces. It responds to differences in rotation speeds of each rear wheel to redirect torque within a fraction of a second.

So, where there are significant differences in grip between the two rear wheels, the best possible traction and therefore maximum propulsion are ensured on slippery surfaces and when accelerating out of a bends.

The M-specific compound high-performance brakes of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé provide impressive stability, even under extreme stress, and are extremely light. Their design was derived from motor racing and guarantees excellent deceleration with significantly reduced heat sensitivity.

Each inner-vented and perforated grey cast-iron brake disc - 360mm diameter at the front and 350mm at the rear – is linked to it floating aluminium disc chamber by cast-in premium steel pins.

Rear-wheels drive provides the ideal basis for thrilling driving dynamics because the steering and drive function apply to different axles. The rack-and-pinion steering has hydraulic power assistance that regulates its pressure according to road speed.

Dynamic stability control on the BMW 1 Series M Coupé includes anti-lock brakes, wheelspin control, emergency braking assistance, hill-start braking, cornering braking control, anti-fade and a disc-drying function.

They all combine on wet or slippery surfaces to intervenes early but discreetly to prevent oversteer – though an experienced driver can activate M Dynamic Mode with a switch on the instrument panel to delay the activation threshold for driving off on snow or gravel by means of controlled slip.

The system will also alloy deliberate dynamic oversteer.

Exclusive and characteristically M:
Sports-car ambience in the cabin

IT IS NOT least due to its exclusive interior design that the unmistakable M feeling can be sensed even before the engine is started. The characteristically M cabin and the model-specific colour and materials concept create a style which perfectly recreates a sports-car ambience.

The standard sports seats upholstered in Boston leather give the driver and front passenger excellent lateral hold even when taking bends in dynamic style. The design, created exclusively for the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, includes orange contrast stitching on the black leather of the seats and M logo-embossed head restraints.

It is characteristic of sports cars that dark colours dominate inside the vehicle to keep the driver focused on the road. In the BMW 1 Series M Coupé this effect is created not only by the anthracite-coloured BMW Individual roof lining but also by the exclusive design of the dark Alcantara interior trim strips and door panels. These design elements also feature orange stitching, as do the gearshifter and handbrake gaiter.

An M driver’s footrest and M door sills round off the exclusively styled interior.

The model-specific design of the characteristic M cabin in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé also contributes to optimum vehicle control. In the instrument panel, grey dial faces for the tachometer and a speedometer (it reads to 300km/h) with red needles are combined with white display illumination.

The M leather steering wheel, which also comes as standard, has multifunction keys to operate the audio and cellphone systems. In addition, the characteristic M button on the right steering wheel spoke enables the driver to switch to a sports vehicle set-up. This configuration activates a particularly sporty curve in the engine control unit; accelerator pedal pressure generates a swifter response.

Extensive range of standard equipment,
high-quality options and innovative
BMW ConnectedDrive features

IN ADDITION to those features characteristic of M vehicles and other elements specific to this particular model which directly contribute to creating an exclusive driving experience in a high-performance sports car, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé has an extensive range of standard equipment which underscores its premium character.

Among them are practical qualities such as four individual bucket-style seats intended for long-distance comfort and a boot capacity of 370 litres. More comfort needs can be met through a range of innovative options largely unique in this competitive field.

Air-conditioning, cruise control, BMW Radio Business audio system with MP3-capable CD player and six speakers are standard. Options include two-zone auto air-con, comfort access, automatic screen wipers and automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with satnav and had-drive storage.

In conjunction with the satnav, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé gets the operating system iDrive which enables control of infotainment, navigation and communication functions using a controller and an 8.8-inch diplay. The range of features available through BMW ConnectedDrive includes adaptive, auto-dipping headlights, front/rear parking radar and unlimited internet access which also allows access to internet-based services to optimise navigation and entertainment functions.

Thanks to the new interface technology, the latest Apple iPhone and iPod Touch can be controlled through the iDrive menu. BlackBerry can display e-mails on the vehicle monitor via Bluetooth.
