Audi’s announced drivetrain changes to its A3 range as the 1.9 TDI is discontinued and dual-clutch shifting is expanded to the entry-level 1.4 models.
Trending the global design move to smaller, more sophisticated forced-induction engines the A3 range is bidding its 1.9 TDI farewell.
From November local customers wishing to purchase their A3 hatch- and Sportback with entry-level compression ignition power will be serviced by a new 1.6 TDI engine, which debuted locally in the new Polo last year.
Polo power for your A3
Statistically the smaller engine boasts similar outputs (77kW/250Nm) to the 1.9 TDI it replaces.
Emissions are reduced though, with the 1.6 TDI dipping under the proposed government emission tax threshold (120g/km of CO2) with a low carbon output signature of only 102g/km.
Beyond retaining its 1.9 TDI predecessor’s performance and lowering emissions, the 1.6 TDI’s combined cycle consumption is claimed to be a stupefyingly low 4.1l/100km.
Balancing performance and economy is Audi’s latest generation seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, which also becomes available on the 1.4T FSI as part of the A3's November update.
The new A3 TDI and 1.4T FSI dual-clutch models are set to retail in Attraction trim only.
Tallying standard safety specification are dual front and side airbags and ESP. You pay extra for trimmings like leather seats, a multifunction steering wheel and parking sensors.
Standard comfort and convenience items include Climatronic dual-zone air-conditioning, MP3/Aux-in enabled infotainment, chrome door handle and bumper accents and 16-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.
If you want a premium hatchback without falling foul of government's pending emission tax, these new A3 1.6 TDIs makes a very convincing argument for themselves.
