Audi's S3 Sportback storms in SA

The third-generation Audi S3 Sportback made its South African debut at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show.  Now it’s arrived at dealer floors, ready to go on sale.

The automaker says the four-cylinder engine has been overhauled with the only thing in common with its predecessor is its displacement of 1984cc, making 206kW available at 5500rpm and 380Nm constantly available from 1800 to 5500rpm. The S3 Sportback will only be available in S tronic transmission in South Africa.

The 2.0 TFSI provides power and efficiency by relying on many new technologies, says Audi, ranging from dual injection through the Audi valvelift system and an exhaust manifold integrated within the cylinder head, to innovative thermal management.

Audi says when it’s equipped with the six-speed S tronic gearbox, it sprints from 0 to 100km/h in five seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h. The 2.0 TFSI consumes just 6.9 litres/100km (under test control conditions) in the combined cycle with 159g/km of CO2 emissions - reducing the fuel consumption by 1.5/100km compared to the previous generation S3 Sportback.

The dual-clutch transmission can be controlled via optional shift paddles on the steering wheel and offers the automatic modes D and S in addition to manual mode.

WHAT’S NEW?

There’s permanent all-wheel drive and a redesigned multi-plate clutch and Audi says, the 2.0 TFSI is more than five kilograms lighter than the previous engine and is tilted backward by 12 degrees.

Audi says in addition to its S sport suspension which lowers the body by 25mm, the axle-load distribution (59%/41%, front/rear) and new progressive steering contribute significantly to sporty handling. The car is 70kg lighter than the previous model, with a kerb weight of 1445kg.

The S-specific grille sports aluminium-look, double horizontal bars and the insert is matte grey, says Audi. The bumper has integrated air inlets with aluminium-look double ribs and LED headlights as optional as an alternative to the standard xenon plus headlights.

Audi says there are aluminium-look exterior mirror housings and special sill strips which accentuate the side view. The rear bumper has been redesigned and the diffuser with an aluminium-look double bar houses the exhaust system’s four oval tailpipes, which sport chrome tips. LED technology is also used in the tail lights while the S3 roof spoiler extends the roof.

The standard multifunction sport steering wheel, covered in leather, features a flat-bottomed rim, while pedals and footrests are made of brushed aluminium. Instrument gauges are dark grey and the indicators white. Topping the range of infotainment modules is MMI navigation plus with MMI touch which is offered as an option.

The following equipment is offered as standard on the S3 Sportback:
