At long last: New Mazda2 revealed

  Production of 4th-generation Mazda2 begins
  Powered by Skyactive technology
  • Kodo - Soul of Motion design

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Mazda revealed its fourth-generation Mazda2 on Thursday (July 17) as production of its latest hatchback began at its Hofu factory in Hiroshima, Japan.

The new Mazda2, based on the Hazumi concept, is powered by the automaker's SkyActiv technology and "Kodo – Soul of Motion" design language. More than 2.4-million Mazda2 units (also sold as the Demio) have been sold globally since it was first launched in 1996.

The Mazda2 joins its similarly Kodo designed siblings siblings – the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3.

SKYACTIVE ENGINES

According to the automakers, the new hatchback is expected to raise the bar in the crucial B segment, Europe's largest in terms of market share.

The hatchback is powered by a new member of Mazda's SkyActiv engine family - the 77kW/250Nm 1.5 SkyActiv-D diesel and, depending on the market, petrol versions of its 1.5 SkyActiv-G.

Each can be mated to either a six-speed manual or auto with stop/start technology and brake energy regeneration.
