Arty Pugs to boost 207 popularity

Despite pressure on customers to buy-down, Peugeot’s not seen significant uptake on its largely ignored 207.

To address the situation the automaker has reintroduced its Pop Art nameplate in South Africa, applied to the compact hatchback with the aim of adding sales momentum to the range.

The reconfigured 207 product has five derivatives (instead of four), including two Pop Art, a single (mid-range) Active and two premium Sportium models.

MODEST MULTIVALVE

Entry-level Pop Art 207 models (the funky Peugeot trim was last available locally on the 206) are neatly styled with colour-coded door release and body strips (with chrome cladding stripes). There's aircon, powered front windows, MP3-enabled radio/CD front-loader, central locking and two front air bags.

The 207 Pop Art is powered by a modest 1.4-litre multivalve engine producing 54kW/118Nm. Safety intervention is limited to all-wheel ABS electronic brake force distribution.

Technically there not really two distinct Pop Art models in terms of equipment: one includes a service plan, the other doesn't.

CRUISE CONTROL

Beyond the psychological R150 000 threshold the mid-range Active model gains a significantly more powerful 1.4 (70kW/Nm) but with all the Pop Art’s styling embellishments (sans the "Pop Art" badging, of course) 207 Active, in addition, has 15" alloy rims and a shapelier front bumper.

Inside, the Active adds to the Pop Art’s features with powered operation on all four windows and the driver gets to play with cruise control and a trip data computer.

The 207 hatchback range is now headlined by two Sportium models; a petrol and turbodiesel. Each is a 1.6 with the naturally aspirated petrol producing 88kW/160Nm and the turbodiesel 82kW/270Nm.

Distinguishing these Sportium 207 models from their lesser siblings are 16" alloy rims, aluminium pedals and door-sill protectors and, naturally, "Sportium" badging.
