Alfa's new Quadrifoglio Verdes for SA

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a new and high-performance Quadrifoglio Verde version -there’s a new Mito in the mix too.

Fiat Chrysler SA says both will arrive here but is vague on the dates - fourth quarter of 2014 or early 2015. More information on the local cars will be available closer to its launch.

LONG TRADITION

The Giulietta combines 90 years of Quadrifoglio Verde tradition with the very best of Alfa Romeo DNA and shares its engine and Alfa TCT transmission with the Alfa Romeo 4C supercar.

Alfa says that - along with a new power train, enhanced styling features and a revised interior with standard satnav - the new model will include launch control, to help the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde reach 100km/h in six seconds and a claimed top speed of 240km/h.

The automaker said: “The first Alfa Romeo to bear the Quadrifoglio Verde was the 'RL' driven by Ugo Sivocci that won the Targa Florio in 1923. Since then all racing Alfa Romeo cas have carried the emblem for good luck and in the 1960’s they also began appearing on high-performance versions of road-going cars.”

There’s a new QV intake engine sound system (fake exhaust noises) along with a new steering-wheel, instrument panel with a Quadrifoglio Verde logo and new wraparound sports seats. New paint colours include two reds and a grey for the launch edition special series.

Alfa added: “Under the bonnet is a thoroughbred Alfa Romeo engine - the all-aluminium unit first seen in the Alfa Romeo 4C supercar. The four-cylinder, direct-injection, 1750cc turbopetrol engine delivers 173kW from 5750rpm and 340Nm from 2000-4000rpm with 80% available from 1800rpm."

These figures, Alfa says, translate into 194Nm/litre and 102kW/litre.

In addition to the 1750 engine the six-speed TCT dry twin-clutch transmission has also been inherited from the 4C.

MOST POWERFUL MITO

The 1.4 MultiAir turbopetrol engine pushes out 126kW/250Nm and is combined with gearshift paddles and the brand’s TCT transmission for the first time. It reaches 100km/h in 7.sec and has a claimed top speed of 220km/h. Maximum power is 126kW from 5500rpm with 250Nm from 2500rpm.

Alfa says styling features include a burnished finish on exterior elements and on the 18” alloy rims, plus a rear spoiler, sports rear bumper and twin exhaust pipes.

The interior has a new flat-base sports steering-wheel and new Uconnect 13cm touch screen multimedia system with satnav.

The newMiTo Quadrifoglio Verde, says the automaker, has had a transformation similar to its bigger stablemate that "offers enhanced Italian style with higher levels of performance, efficiency, specification and driving satisfaction".

The exterior is distinguished by the burnished finish on the headlights surrounds, grille, external mirrors, door releases and tail lights' surrounds, as well as its rear spoiler, sports rear bumper, twin chromed exhaust pipes, 18” alloy rims, red Brembo brake callipers and the Quadrifoglio Verde emblem on the front wings.

Available options include light Sabelt seats with the Alfalogo in the central part of the Alcantara material and wraparound carbon-fibre back rests.

The MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde will make its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the end of June.
