Alfa Romeo’s TCT twin-clutch transmission system is now available in South Africa in the Mito hatchback.
The six-speed transmission was developed in-house by Fiat and is combined here with Fiat’s MultiAir engine with stop&start technology as standard.
As with other DSG systems, the transmission uses two clutches which preselects the next gear while another is still in use, allowing for faster, more seamless changes and less power loss during gear changes.
DISTINCTIVE TRIM
The 1.4-litre MultiAir engine delivers 100kW at 5000rpm and has a peak torque figure of 230Nm at 1750rpm but, with the TCT in use, it sprints from 0 – 100km/h in 8.2 seconds (the manual does it in 8.4) and has a top speed of 207km/h.
Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are down too: from 7.4 to 7.1 litres/100km and 129 to 126g/km, respectively.
The Mito TCT is available in Alfa Romeo’s Distinctive trim level and comes equipped with cruise control, “Follow Me Home” headlights, power mirrors, steering wheel controls, Blue&Me® audio system, front foglamps, LED rear lights and 17” alloy wheels.
Optional features include a visibility pack, which includes automatic headlamps and rain sensors, and dual zone climate control.
RECENT MITO UPDATES
As with all Mito’s sold in South Africa, the TCT-equipped model is equipped with seven airbags as standard and Alfa’s vehicle dynamics control system that includes hill holder, ABS, brake assist and a dynamic steering torque system.
The addition of the TCT model the MiTo range now sees it comprising four derivates - Distinctive, Distinctive TCT, Quadrifoglio Verde and Quadrifoglio Verde Sport.
The Quadrifoglio Verde and Quadrifoglio Verde Sport models were upgraded in November 2011 where changes included increased power output from their 1.4-litre motors from 100 to 125kW and the introduction of Alfa’s active suspension.
As with the rest of the Mito range, the new Mito TCT requires services at 30 000km intervals. All Mitos are sold with a five-year or 150 000km warranty and a six-year or 90 000km service plan.
