AMG-tuned GLA headed for SA

Mercedes-Benz tuning arm turned its attention to the automaker’s new compact GLA to create a 265kW/450Nm performance-tuned version – the GLA 45 AMG. What’s more, the new SUV will arrive in SA later this year. We have gallery images!

At the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz enticed fans with the local unveiling of its SA-bound GLA. The compact SUV is due to be launched mid-2014.

In January 2014, Mercedes-Benz revealed that the AMG-tuned variant will arrive on our shores later in 2014.

The new GLA 45 AMG is powered by a 265kW/450Nm turbocharged 2.0 petrol mated to a seven-speed auto and AMG 4Matic all-wheel drive.

In standard guise, the GLA sprints from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds on to a top speed of 250km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at a claimed 7.5litres/100km with emissions of 175g/km.

FIVE AMG-TUNED SUVS

Visually, the GLA 45 AMG benifits from numerous styling revisions, while performance-oriented options include AMG sports suspension and the AMG high-performance braking system.

The GLA is the third vehicle to receive AMG’s four-cylinder 2.0 turbo after the A45 and the CLA45, while expanding the AMG SUV line-up (internationally) to five models - ML 63,  GL 63, G 63 and G 65.

Chairman of the board of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moer, said: “Currently there is no segment growing faster than that of compact SUVs. For Mercedes-AMG it is therefore a logical step to make a dynamic statement in this segment with the GLA 45 AMG.

“Our new high-performance-SUV not only offers the world's most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine, but also impressively low fuel consumption and emissions figures.

An AMG performance exhaust system, also equipped with an exhaust flap, is available as an optional extra.  According to the automaker, “Customers opting for this system will experience an even more appealing and distinctive engine sound.”

DYNAMIC DRIVING

The shift times in manual mode M and in sport mode S are sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT. Another feature designed to enhance performance is the automaker's so-called "Momentary M mode", as seen in its SLS AMG Coupe Black Series.

Comfort mode (C mode) switches the transmission to deliver smoother shifts. Stop/start is also active in C mode. Drivers can also choose from three driving modes - Electronic Stability Control on (ESP), Sport and ESP off.

In standard guise, the GLA 45 AMG runs on five-spoke AMG alloys with 235/45 R 19 tyres. Customers can opt for larger ten-spoke alloys with 235/40 R 20 tyres as an optional extra.

The GLA 45 introduces new AMG badging on the grille, while the front apron, its splitter and the twin-blade grille are finished in matte grey.

Inside, the AMG sports seats are trimmed in a mix of synthetic leather and microfibre fabric with red stitching and red seatbelts. The three-spoke leather sports steering wheel also has red contrast top-stitching.

A two-tube instrument cluster with central colour display greets the driver with the AMG start-up screen when the driver's door is opened.

GLA 45 AMG EDITION 1

The GLA 45 AMG Edition 1 adds exclusive exterior and interior details. The Edition 1 adds a black aerodynamics package, consisting of larger front splitter, new front apron and rear diffuser, as well as silver/red AMG racing stripes and highlights.

The AMG Night package is also part of the standard equipment, as is the Edition 1 badge on the front wing.
Inside, the package adds black and red stitching throughout, Edition 1 badging and exclusive trim on the instrument panel.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG will celebrate its world premiere on January 13 2014 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, USA.
