A45 AMG - Merc's RS3-fighter

Performance, luxury, driving dynamics... the AMG brand has been synonymous with driving excellence four more than four decades.

Founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Grossaspach Germany, AMG was created as the performance division of Mercedes-Benz.

Selvin Govender, divisional marketing manager of Mercedes-Benz SA, said: “Today AMG is the technological spearhead in the high-performance car segment of Mercedes-Benz. The AMG brand promise of 'Driving Performance' stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement.”

26 MODELS BY 2013

In 2012, the group extended its range of AMG vehicles to 22 ranging from 310 kW to 463kW.

As AMG moves towards a new era, the model range has become more diverse with the selection on offer including sedans, coupes, SUVs as well as roadsters and the SLS AMG, its first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG.

Govender said: "By the end of 2013 we expect to see 26 AMG models in the range with power outputs ranging from 260 to 552kW."

ELECTRIC SLS AMG FOR 2013


The SLS AMG was unveiled in 2009 and became the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG. The spectacular gullwing model was followed in 2011 by the open-top SLS AMG roadster.

In 2013, the SLS AMG E-Cell will make its global debut a the world’s first super sports car with electric drive.

AMG TAKES ON THE COMPACT CLASS


For the first time in its history, AMG will enter the compact hatch/sedan class with its A45 AMG, its moniker derived from "45 years of AMG".

The model is powered by a two-litre, four-cylinder turbo, reportedly capable of 260kW/400Nm mated to a AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed and sporting all-wheel drive. As we've come to expect from AMG, the A45 has sports suspension with independently developed front and rear axles, speed-sensitive steering, high-performance brakes and three-stage ESP with "Sport handling" mode.

Ola Kallenius, chairman of the board of management of Mercedes-AMG, said: "Our goal is to build the most dynamic, most powerful and at the same time most efficient four-cylinder series production compact car.

"Together with other future high-performance compact cars, the new A45 AMG will embody exclusive dynamism and the 'AMG Performance 50' growth strategy. With this passionate commitment to what for us is a new vehicle segment, Mercedes-AMG plans to make a significant contribution to the growth of Mercedes-Benz Cars."

The A45 AMG will make its world premiere in the first quarter of 2013.

SLS BLACK FOR JOZI SHOW


Govender said:  “For the first time we will see a GL 63 AMG in the range and expect this model in April. One of our highlights of the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show will be the SLS AMG Black Series - in extremely limited numbers. As sleek as they come, the latest CLA AMG will bring a stylish and sporting close to our 2013 offering.”

FORMULA 1 ROOTS

AMG has been providing F1 with its pace and medical cars since 1996. The Mercedes F1 team will launch its 2013 car on February 4. The 2013 safety car will be the SLS AMG GT and the should any driver require medical assistance, they will be karted around in a C63 AMG estate.
