A3 lifts its top for Frankfurt

Audi's A3 has gone beautifully cabrio at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show, with quattro in place and an S3 performance version on the way.

FRANKFURT, Germany – Audi surprised with a sleek new compact soft-top convertible at the international auto show here, adding accessible wind-in-hair driving pleasure to the all-new A3’s long list of attributes.

The car will be available in most markets before the end of March 2014 and is the fourth model in the latest A3 range.

Its powered fabric roof will lift or drop in less than 18 seconds, Audi says, and when retracted is full concealed within the car’s rear body.

QUATTRO-EQUIPPED

Three engines will be available at launch - a 1.4 TFSI capable of 105kW with cylinder-on-demand technology, a 135kW 1.8 TFSI and a two-litre turbodiesel making 112kW.

A "first-ever" quattro-equipped cabrio will follow, along with the performance version, an S3 cabrio. High-end equipment and advanced options including Audi connect with 4G/LTE high-speed internet connectivity will be available.

The car has had to grow to accommodate the folded top – from 4.24 to 4.42m with marginal increases in wheelbase and body width – but is 15mm lower than the hard-top models. Strangely, luggage capacity has grown by 60 litres.

The front of the Audi A3 Cabriolet is characterised by the single-frame grille, flanked by flat headlights that use halogen or xenon bulbs or diodes. The windscreen frame is aluminium and an aluminium-look strip runs around the roof aperture.

The fabric roof, Audi says, stretches electro-hydraulically over a lightweight kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel and complements the car's design, will operate at up to 50km/h and folds into a three lays in a tray that “barely affects luggage capacity, which is 287 litres”.

The roof has a glass rear window and is available in black, grey and brown; the lining can be black or silver. A wind deflector and head-level heating for the front seats will be available from the options list but self-deploying rollover protection comes with the car.
