464kW SLS AMG sees Black

2012-11-12 12:40

BLACK IS BACK: The fifth model bearing Merc's super-hot Black Series has been revealed as the SLS AMG Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG wizards of Affalterbach have ripped the covers off their latest Black Series model – the new SLS AMG Coupe Black Series.

Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racing version of the gullwinged supercar, the Black Series model is said to display a “mix of breathtaking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction” in line with AMG’s Lightweight Performance strategy.

HEART-STOPPING PERFORMANCE

In this model, AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 generates 464kW at 7400rpm and 635Nm at 5500rpm and rockets the SLS from 0 – 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. It has a top speed of 315km/h.

According to Merc, the power hike is largely due to a higher maximum engine speed (up from 7200 to 8000rpm), a revised high-speed valvetrain with revised camshafts and optimized bucket tappets with a special coating usually reserved for racing vehicles and modifications to the air intake system.

Standard features are understandably premium and include AMG’s ride control performance suspension system, high-performance composite brake system, forged light alloy wheels shod with newly-developed sports tyres, a seven-speed dual-clutch sports transmission and a new sports exhaust system fashioned from titanium and 13kg lighter than its predecessor.

An AMG Aerodynamics package, with carbon-fibre components, can also be specified.

The Black Series nomenclature, introduced in 2006, is enough to send most petrolheads’ hearts aflutter. The SLK 55 AMG was the first to carry the badge, followed by the CLK 63 AMG in 2007, the SL 65 AMG in 2008 and the C 63 AMG in 2011.

Ola Källenius, chairman of Mercedes-AMG, said: “The new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is a perfect study in the 100% transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to the road.

COMING TO SA

“We have drawn inspiration from the worldwide success of the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car on both a conceptual and a technological level.

"Boasting numerous lightweight components and fantastic driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated 'Driving Performance'. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and highly emotional driving experiences.”

Tobias Moers, head of overall vehicle development at Mercedes-AMG followed to say, “Fans of high-performance super sports cars will be fascinated by its high-tech package. The basis for passionate performance and supreme driving dynamics is provided by numerous new developments in the area of the engine, power transmission, suspension and aerodynamics. Great efforts in the field of lightweight design have resulted in a kerb weight of 1550kg (70kg lighter than the standard SLS AMG)."

The SLS AMG Coupe Black Series will be launched in South Africa, albeit in "very limited numbers", Mercedes-Benz SA said. No pricing details are available as yet; the cars will be launched here by mid-2013.
