The new VW Touareg

The Touareg is 4 754mm long, 1 928mm wide and 1 726mm high, while the wheelbase is 2 855mm.

These dimensions make it the longest and widest in its segment, while also leading the class in wheelbase size.

VW says ground clearance is quite generous, with large wheels complimenting the design of the wheel housings and bumpers to clearly distinguish the Touareg as a Sports Utility Vehicle.

It features a permanent 4XMOTION four-wheel drive system, giving the Touareg extra grip in slippery on-road and off-road conditions. This is assisted by ABS brakes, discs all round, electronic stability programme (ESP), brake assist and an optional tyre pressure control system.

The Touareg also has comprehensive safety features. An advanced crash signal system activates the airbags within milliseconds of an impact, giving passengers that vital last frontier of protection. The same sensors unlock all the doors to make access easier when rescue becomes necessary.

The Touareg has a comprehensive airbag system that covers the front and rear occupants. Front occupants are catered for by dashboard mounted airbags and part of the curtain airbag system which also secures the rear passengers.

The seat belt's 3-point inertia system is triggered by electric sensors which protect the occupants in an emergency.

The Touareg comes well equipped and comes standard with leather upholstery and heated front seats. Electric seat adjustment is an option on the TDI and V8 but standard on the V10.

Another option is Keyless Access System (standard on the V10) which enables the driver to always keep the key in the pocket while the car locks and unlocks itself on leaving or boarding.

A Delta radio system with 11 speakers is standard on all Touaregs.

The car is available with a host of optional extras including satellite navigation.
