132kW Fiesta ST: Yes, it's coming!

2012-12-07 13:41

Hot on the heels of the launch of the latest Focus ST, Ford SA has confirmed that its hot baby sister, the Fiesta ST, will be here second quarter of 2013.

The all-new model will take the car’s performance to a new level with its 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine delivering a whopping (for a car of this size) 132kW and 240Nm of torque. It reaches 0-100km/h in less than seven seconds and has a top speed of more than 220km/h.

SPORTING DRIVERS

Developed by Ford Team RS, the little Fiesta ST delivers significant ride-and-handling improvements through a specially tuned chassis that sits 15mm lower than the standard Fiesta, Ford’s enhanced 'torque vectoring control' and three electronic stability control modes. The technologies were put to the test over 5000km on Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The automaker says also that the car has levels of equipment and specification to suit the sporting driver, with Recaro sports seats standard. It will also be equipped with MyKey and Sync, Ford’s voice-activated in-car connectivity system. A new exterior design drives home the high-performance message and features the latest Ford design signatures, including a large trapezoidal grille.

The car was engineered using Ford’s global performance car DNA and developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of the company’s global performance vehicles group. The experience of the engineering team in working with Ford’s motorsport partners to develop the Fiesta RS WRC, Fiesta Rallycross and Racing Fiesta vehicles, also proved invaluable for developing the new Fiesta ST.

Ford SA marketing manager Gavin Golightly said: “We’re delighted to be bringing a new generation Fiesta ST to South African performance enthusiasts in 2013. With the Fiesta ST joining the Focus ST, we will again be able to deliver a choice of affordable small performance cars designed to deliver a unique blend of stand-out styling and dynamic on-road performance with true practicality for everyday use.”

      bernard.visagie - 2012-12-07 14:39

Yes please, to my mind if the entry level new Focus ST is coming in at just over 300K this thing should be come in at 250K if we are lucky.

Well, the Focus ST1 can be had for just over 300k, and they have to keep a significant price gap if they're going to sell any of the Fiestas at all. Also, the Clio RS is R260k and the Polo GTi R275k... Given all of that, I'd guess that it's going to live in the R255-270k range. Some confirmation from Ford (rather than my conjecture) would be nice, though.

I remember paying R170k for a brand new Fiesta ST in 2006..... R80k (50%) price hike in 6 1/2 years - proof that manufacturers are milking us.....

Ronald we will only know the price closer to the launch date

I like the styling. Looks fantastic in white. The boys at Team RS obviously know how to make a great performance hatch. The old model Fiesta ST was affordable and a hoot to drive. Lets hope this new one is priced well too.

Always room for one more hot hatch.Fords are usually priced well so should come in under the Corsa OPC and Polo GTi price I think. Why did it take so long to get here?

Looks sportier than the Polo but the OPC is better in the looks department.

@erik.p.vanwyk - Ford only brought the last Fiesta ST out just before the facelift / halfway through that Fiesta models life cycle. I agree, they launch them too late!

  • jacques.d.plessis.75 - 2012-12-10 08:52

It will be overpriced like all the boy racers out there.

  • annette.duvenhage.1 - 2012-12-14 16:58

Just before the Fiesta is launched we will have thie prices.

  • riaan.vanderwesthuizen.79 - 2012-12-23 08:11

Argh ... they should have given it the same rear diffuser/exhaust layout as the Focus ST
