Motorsport roundup: Wernersson, Kristoffersson sets the bar in STCC

London - Volkswagen kicked off this season’s Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) with a strong result. The best Golf GTI TCR driver in Knutstorp was Andreas Wernersson (S), who finished sixth in the opening race, before converting pole position into victory in race two.

World Rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson (S) also claimed a podium finish on the first race weekend of the STCC season: Having finished fourth to narrowly miss out on a podium in race one, Kristoffersson picked up a trophy for third place in race two.

The two Volkswagen drivers are well-placed in the championship: Wernersson is third, ahead of Kristoffersson in fourth – just six and nine points behind championship leader Daniel Haglöf (S, Seat), who took victory in the opening race.

Anderstorp hosts round two of the STCC in mid-June.

Andreas Wernersson (S), Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR #7 said: “The win feels fantastic. I not only got off to a great start in race two, but also paced my tyres well. We have made a good start to the season, and will look to build on that next time out in Anderstorp in a few weeks.”

Johan Kristoffersson (S), Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR #3 added: “I made a good start in the second race and continued to make progress after the safety car phase. I could not do much more than that, as the front tyres were already too worn to push any harder.”

Rob Huff wins again in the Volkswagen Lamando GT

He came, he saw, and he conquered everything the Chinese Touring Car Championship (CTCC) had to offer: Robert Huff (GB) won both races in the high-class racing series at the wheel of a Volkswagen Lamando GTS.

He took victory in race one, which was suspended due to a number of rain-related incidents, from pole position. The reverse grid system meant he then started race two from twelfth place.

Huff, who can only start four of the season’s eight races, in accordance with the series’ regulations, ensured that the official Volkswagen China team made a dream start to the new season. As well as the defending champions, the CTCC also features such manufacturers as Ford, Kia, Senova and Mercedes-Benz.
Huff usually drives a Golf GTI in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR), in which he claimed his first win of the season in Hungary last weekend.

The CTCC now moves on to Zhuhai, China, for round two on 19 and 20 May.

Robert Huff (GB), Volkswagen Lamando GTS #7 said: “The opening race went well, until it started to rain. The red flags came a bit too late, as many had already come off in turn one. Race two was far more fun, as you can overtake in a lot of places on these tracks and in these cars. A brace of wins for the SAIC VW333 Racing team is obviously a fantastic start to the season.”
