Moto2: SA's Brad Binder soldiers to sixth in Czech Republic

Cape Town - There was no champagne-drenched celebration for South African racer Brad Binder on Sunday.

Binder struggled to finish sixth at the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic after starting in seventh place on the grid in round number 10 of the Moto2 World Championship.

In the final race before the summer break two weeks ago, Binder clinched his first ever win in the class at the Sachsenring in Germany.

But the momentum did not seem to carry through to this weekend.

At the end of the second lap Binder had pushed to 5th overall, but quickly fell to 8th. The remainder of the race was taken up by Binder and the rest of the field battling with tire wear issues.

Last lap heroics ensured a 6th as he took German racer Marcel Schrotter in the final corner to clinch sixth.

Binder now moves up to 5th overall in the championship with nine rounds left in the 2018 season.

Further ahead, meanwhile, Binder’s Ajo Racing KTM team-mate Miguel Oliveira claimed victory and the championship lead from Sky VR46 Racing’s Francesco Bagnaia.

Oliviera put in a spectacular performance and in finished in dramatic fashion after a battle with Bagnaia’s team-mate, Luca Marini in the final stages.

Marini claimed second place and Bagnaia third, handing Oliviera a narrow two point lead overall.

Further back, South African racer Steven Odendaal clinched 19th spot while well-known South African Sheridan Morais finished last in 24th on his wildcard entry.

The MotoGP championship heads to Spielberg in Austria later this month, where Binder finished 7th last year.
