WRC: Solberg wins tragic GB Rally

2005-09-19 10:30

Petter Solberg, Subaru Impreza

Loeb dropped to third overall behind teammate Francois Duval, while Subaru's Petter Solberg, who was second at the moment of the accident, was declared the winner .

Park (39) was fatally injured when the pair's Peugeot left the road on the second of Sunday's stages.

Märtin's Peugeot 307 WRC came only slightly off line in the early part of SS15 but came onto loose gravel and hit a tree with the co-driver's door at full force. The event was immediately halted.

As a sign of mourning Peugeot withdrew its other 307CC, the car of Marcus Gronholm and Timo Rautiainen.

Ironically Park's WRC career start was in Rally GB 1994

Mitsubishi's Harri Rovanpera finished fourth overall with teammate and Gianluigi Galli in 13th spot.

Colin McRae achieved his stated aim of bringing the best result of the season for the Skoda Motorsport World Rally Team when he finished seventh.

Team mate Armin Schwarz ended the British event 14th.

The Ford Focus of Toni Gardemeister was disqualified and he was also not allowed to restart under super rally rules.

The official statement claimed that in a weight check during leg 1 the Ford was 4 kg under the minimum weight and the penalty for that was exclusion.
