Audi managed to pull off a surprise victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2011 despite two of its three race cars crashing during the race.
Allan McNish, a two-time winner of the event, crashed less than an hour into the race while trying to pass a Ferrari. McNish managed to walk away from the crash and fortunately none of the photographers or spectators were hurt despite being close to the crash site.
McNish wouldn’t be the only driver to test the durability of the German automaker’s R18 chassis.
Mike Rockenfeller, who was part of the driver trio which claimed victory in 2010, was involved in a crash with yet another Ferrari. Rockenfeller’s Audi was approaching 321km/h before hitting the Italian team’s vehicle. He managed to escape from the wreckage and was taken to hospital.
Audi’s remaining race car managed to hold off three Peugeots to post its 10th Le Mans victory in 12 years of racing.
