Top drivers sizzle in Formula VW

The Formula VW season-opener got off to a screeching start at the Zwartkops Raceway on March 3, 2012 as the top drivers from 2011 got the battle going.

Saturday’s racing quickly turned predictable as the top three drivers from 2011 set the pace at the front of the field of single-seaters which included three newcomers - Nicholas van Wheely, who has moved up from the F1600 category, Tato Carelio and Nic Champman.

Robert Wolk grabbed an early lead in the series by charging ahead of the field, despite a challenge or two from Simon Moss – the two even touched during the racing as they challenged for the top position.

Defending champion Jayde Kruger was not happy with his car setup, but still produced enough on the day to produce two third place finishes.

BRINGING UP THE REAR

Further down the field in race one, Caleb Williams couldn't find a way past Kruger and found himself stuck in the turbulent air produced by the race car ahead while Van Weely experienced gear selector problems and Ernie van der Walt completed just two laps when his car suffered fuel starvation.

For Carelio, the first race in a new series saw his car's accelerator stick in the open position and he was able to complete just six laps.

In the second race, Williams' accelerator was the one that stuck and Van Weely found himself with a dead battery after completing eight of the ten laps.

The highlight of race two was, however, the battle between Vicki Kemp, Simon Murray and Ernie van der Walt for sixth position. The trio was embroiled in a tough battle that saw Murray emerge the victor with Kemp successfully fending off Van der Walt to claim seventh.
