Tight fight ahead in Formula VW

2012-05-21 07:32

BATTLING IN A VIVO: Driver Kyle Barnes leads the pack in his Volkswagen Polo Vivo. The Formula VW championship will be heading to Zwartkops for round four on May 26.

PORT ELIZABETH - Defending champion in the Formula VW championship, Jayde Kruger, took control of the series at round three of the series in Port Elizabeth.

He finished first and second respectively in the two races to take the championship lead. With the single-seater series heading to Zwartkops for round four on Saturday, May 26, the season for these racers is really getting interesting.

Previously Robert Wolk was at the head of the field but the Aldo Scribante meeting saw Kruger produce a carbon-copy performance of Round 2; pole qualifying (and one point), a race victory and a second. Such consistency is what's got him to the top of the standings while his rivals fought for the lower positions.

Rivalry between Wolk and Simon Moss has created some dramatic racing moments but also created a clear path to the front for the defending champion.

Caleb Williams and Tasmin Pepper are taking advantage of the Moss/Wolk battle to close on the top podium positions. The two are getting closer to the second and third-placed driver; this will create an interesting dynamic later in the year.

Round 4, scheduled for Zwartkops on May 26, is certain to be unpredictable. Round 1 was dominated by Wolk who claimed qualifying position bonus points, points for fastest laps and won both races. A performance like that next weekend will be proof of his single-seater prowess.

Neither Kruger nor Moss has been able to produce a similarly significant result so far in 2012 but their performances have been strong at each round so far. Dynamite racing is the only reasonable prediction for the weekend; the fight at the front of the field is going to be the attention-grabber.
