Supadrift going National in 2012

The first instalment of the 2012 Supadrift Series is just around the corner! On February 25 spectators can expect to be wowed by nearly 20 of South Africa’s top drift pilots who qualified in 2011 and moreover and by new-breed drifters and the young stars of tomorrow.

The first drift war of the year will be at the new home of the premier SupaDrift Series - Zwartkops Raceway, west of Pretoria.

The skill of driving a car sideways with style, flair and precision is what drifting is all about.

OVERALL STYLE

The first qualifying runs will be done solo and drivers will be judged on the angle of their slide, speed, the amount of smoke they produce, how close they can get to clipping points and overall style. Then drivers will face off against each other in tandem battles, each driving taking a turn to lead around the course.

Nerves of steel will be needed as entry speeds into the corners and around the course will reach 150km/h.

Unlike previous SupaDrift Series events, the nine 2012 events will go National, and at the end of the day the driver who comes out on top of the log will go home with bragging rights and cash.

Mikey Skelton, co-founder of the SupaDrift Series, believes that the SupaDrift Series will “take drifting to the top of the motorsport scene”.

'BIGGER THINGS'

Annie Silvia, a co-sponsor of the series, added: “There is no doubt that drifting is an exciting spectator sport. We’ve seen great shows but now we can expect bigger things from SupaDrift events, its drivers and the ancillary sideshow than ever before."

The show will start at 9am on Saturday, February 25, and end at 6pm. Entrance R80 for adults, R40 for children. Tickets will also be available through Computicket.
