Scirocco Cup hat trick for Kelvin

NORISRING, Germany - South African hotshot Kelvin van der Linde scored his third win in a row in Round 4 of the international VW Scirocco R-Cup here on Saturday.

The 17-year-old from Dainfern in Gauteng delivered another accomplished performance to confirm his status as the most successful driver in the series, comfortably winning the 21-lap race around  the demanding street circuit in the ancient city of Nuremburg.

Second, 2.5sec back, was Danish driver Michelle Gatting (19) and third Germany’s Manuel Fahrnauer (19), 3.1sec  behind the winner.

Another South African, Jordan Pepper (16) from Johannesburg, was sixth after starting 12th.

140 POINTS SCORED

Van der Linde started third but after taking the lead on lap three from pole-starer Nicolaj Moller Madsen of Denmark steadily pulled away from the 22-strong field from nine countries in identical VW Scirocco R sports coupes.

With four of the championship’s nine rounds completed, Van der Linde has 140 points and a useful lead of 20 points over his nearest rival, Gatting. *Pepper is third on 82.

“Going into the weekend I never expected to win at the Norisring,” said the Grade 11 student from Dainfern College. “The race is the toughest of the season. The gaps between cars are so small that anybody can come out on top.

“I made a good start, which allowed me to overtake Michelle on lap one. When I then passed Madsen shortly after that I used the push-to-pass system to open up a gap. I also timed the re-start after the pace-car phase perfectly. The overall standings look very good now but there are still five races to go.

The next rounds will be at the Nurburgring in Germany over August 17/18.

*Points of Junior Cup drivers were later revised by VW Motorsport and as a result Jordan Pepper is now second in the championship table.
