SA 5 named for drivers' academy

Five young South African racing drivers have been shortlisted to attend the 2013/2014 International Automobile Federation's Young Driver Excellence Academy.

They are Lance Woolridge, Aston Hare, Jordan Pepper, Kelvin van der Linde and rally driver Henk Lategan.

The five youngsters will be interviewed at the Motorsport South Africa offices in Gauteng on August 7 and the successful candidate will probably be named the following day.

‘SET AN EXAMPLE’

South African National Off-Road Racing Association president Richard Schilling said: “Woolridge’s nomination is a great achievement. It’s richly deserved and he will have the support of the entire cross-country racing fraternity.

“He has also set an example for other young drivers breaking into cross-country racing.”

Woolridge, 22, is the son of former South African champion Neil Woolridge; he and Ward Huxtable won the opening event of the SA season and were fourth in the Sun City 400.

Schilling said Hare, Lategan, Linde and Pepper also showed the depth of young talent emerging in cross-country racing, rallying and circuit racing.

The former president of Motorsport SA added: “There’s a huge amount of young talent in this country and in this respect the future of South African motorsport is in good hands.”
