Getting dirty in Pretoria

More than 400 truck loads will be delivered to the lawns in front the famous Union Buildings for the 2015 Red Bull X-Fighters event.

The first grain of sand was delivered to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. With a month to go before stop four of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour the first of some 400 truck loads rolled in.

To create the 11 000 square meter Red Bull X-Fighters track at the century-old Government buildings of South Africa's capital city will take some 8000 cubic meters of classic red African soil. The soil has a particularly high clay content, which – by adding the right amount of water – compacts during the build to create a dust free surface that offers good traction for the motorbikes.

Coenraad Nolte, who heads up logistics and planning for the event in South Africa, said: "Once the track-build team gets here, they move an enormous amount of dirt. What we need to do, is stockpile dirt.

"We bring in one truck at time, at 18-tonnes per truck."
