Polo Cup wrapped with 2 to go

The Volkswagen Cup series crowned its newest champion at the Killarney race circuit in Cape Town on Saturday, October 1.

Devin Robertson emerged with an unassailable points lead at the event to claim the 2011 title and, at 19, numbers amongst the youngest drivers ever to have held the title of Engen Volkswagen Cup champion.

Robertson expected he would be able to lift the crown after race one on Saturday, but local racer Kosie Weyers had other ideas. Weyers charged to the front of the field early in the first race with Lee Thompson and Kelvin van der Linde in tow.

Robertson had to chase hard in an attempt to catch the leaders, improving to a third-place finish by the end of the first race behind Weyers and Thompson.

RACE TWO ACTION

The action started early in Race Two with Graham Donker spinning out in the first turn, while Thompson and Miguel Pasqualli retired.

The action was undoubtedly at the front of the field with Robertson leading the field and Weyers chasing him to challenge for the lead. The duo battled throughout the race, running down the main straight of Killarney side-by-side with Weyers attempting to dive past Robertson into the first turn.

Robertson was not having any of it though and kept pushing Weyers back into second place. The duel continued until stopped by the chequered flag with Robertson claiming both the race win and the championship title for 2011.

Just two race meetings remain in the 2011 season – both at Zwartkops Raceway – and with the championship winner decided, it will now be up to the other drivers to decide the final two podium positions.
