LE MANS, France - Nissan made history during the 2014 Le Mans test days as the first manufacturer of the modern Le Mans era to use a car with no rear-view mirror.

The original rear-view mirror was developed through motorsport. Indy 500 winner Ray Haroun used one in 1911 on his Marmon Wasp.

With four classes and closing speeds of more than 300km/h at the Le Mans 24 Hours, drivers being aware of other traffic is imperative. Nissan has taken inspiration from its Nissan safety shield and Nissan smart mirror which allows the driver to see behind the car via a camera mounted on the boot lid.

COMPREHENSIVE VIEW

The electric mirror prototype is the first car at Le Mans to have completed a lap of the Sarthe circuit on battery power but on the test day drivers Wolfgang Reip and Tommy Erdos made more history by lapping without rear-view mirrors mandatory for every other entry in the 56-car field.

Normal mirrors can be fitted if the systems fails.

The Zeod's rear-facing camera provides a more comprehensive view conventional than mirrors. The car also has a radar system to alert the driver to upcoming traffic and report its closing speed.

The system can differentiate between cars closing fast or those  staying at a similar distance.

The two systems will again be used from tonight (Friday June 13 2014) for practice and qualifying during which Reip will be joined by fellow GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez and Satoshi Motoyama who both missed the Le Mans test day.

Nissan Motorsport's head of marketing Darren Cox said: “These driver assistance systems are another aspect of future technology transfers that will improve future road cars. The battery technology will help to develop of future versions of the Nissan Leaf and other hybrids but lessons learned will find their way into every Nissan. - Newspress
