Production cars head to the Cape

The second round of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship, and its new four-race format, promises to excite and entertain Capetonians on April 2, 2011.

Killarney fans wait with bated breath to see if the long-awaited Audi S4s will make their debut appearance. Both the Engen Xtreme (Michael Stephen and Tschops Sipuka) and Johan Fourie Racing Teams are working flat out to deliver the goods, but only time will tell if these cars will debut in the Cape.

After two very successful outings at Killarney last year, the Afrox BMW team (Anthony Taylor and Melvill Priest) will be hoping to stamp their authority on the Class A field by adding to their victory tally. The going will however be tough with the Sasol Subaru WRX STI team going from strength to strength, having taken an early championship lead. Hennie Groenewald and Richard Pinard will welcome Tannith Gardner to the team in Cape Town, too.

Class T promises to be as exciting as ever with the Volkswagen and Ford rivalry having expanded to include Opel and BMW.

ALL-OUT BATTLE

Whilst they all represent the VW brand, there is little between Graeme Nathan (IndyOil) and Gennaro Bonafede (Ferodo) in terms of pace and both will be hungry for victory in Cape Town. Kieren Quarmby (Interfile) is also well within reach of the podium, but more than anything, he will be hoping for better luck at Killarney this year.

The BP/Castrol Ford Focus STs seem to be setting the benchmark in the early part of the season and drivers Gary Formato and Shaun Duminy will be eager to maintain this status.

After some teething problems at Kyalami, Michael van Rooyen (Williams Hunt) will be back in action in his Opel Astra OPC. The car is expected to have the pace to run at the front of the pack.

Adding to the Volkswagen arsenal will be Capetonians, Nieyaaz Modack (Woodmead Auto) and Ebrahim Levy (Asrin Motorsport). Modack won a race at Killarney last year and both drivers will be looking to make full use of their home ground advantage.

Mishal Sing will add a fourth manufacturer into the Class T mix with his LiquiMoly backed BMW 120d.

The action will kick-off with three practice sessions on the Friday afternoon, while Saturday, April 2, will be frenetic with an intense qualifying session and four scheduled races.
