NASCAR star speeds in supercar

If ever you are snared by traffic law enforcement for travelling at 205km/h in a 70km/h zone, you had better have a rather good excuse – like being a famous racing driver…

This is exactly what happened to Toyota’s star NASCAR driver Kyle Busch in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Busch drives a Toyota Camry in the NASCAR championship, where he is currently third in the Sprint Cup standings). Quite sportingly Lexus loaned their sibling brand’s star driver a very yellow example of its rare LFA supercar for evaluation purposes, with predictable results.

One hardly expects a skilled tin-top racer to cruise around in a supercar capable of 325km/h, and Busch duly dialled in a substantial surge of the 412kW 4.8-litre V10’s performance, getting up to three times the legal limit before a highway patrol officer intervened.

To his credit, Busch did not try to evade the law enforcement officer or resist arrest, cooperating fully as he was transported to jail.

Busch has apologised for his irresponsible behaviour, but Carolinian residents are not impressed; especially after he was caught for speeding in Irdell County back in 2008 and previously charged for reckless driving after performing a burnout in the parking are of a Virginia fast food restaurant in 2006.

NO LICENCE? NO PROBLEM

There is a high degree of probability Busch will lose his driving licence due to this latest speeding offence, with a court date penned for 20 June 2011. Although that is sure to inconvenience the 26-year old racer’s time management, it will in no way impact on his racing career. NASCAR drivers are not required to hold a valid driving licence to race, due to the outlaw roots of the wildly popular racing series, which originated as a test arena for modified cars used by bootleggers during the American prohibition.

American auto industry analysts say that Busch’s speeding incident could in fact be the result of a carefully orchestrated marketing stunt by Lexus to bolster the brand’s bad boy appeal, as Busch is known for his wild side and could hardly have been expected to restrain himself at the helm of this most sophisticated and impeccable crafted of all Japanese supercars.

Interestingly, this is the second time a lurid yellow LFA has made news in the United States. Socialite, Paris Hilton, took delivery of one of first LFAs to be shipped Stateside in January 2011; finished in similar Tweety bird hue, as a 30th birthday gift from her boyfriend.
