Giniel de Villiers, the South African winner of the 2009 Dakar rally in his Volkswagen Race Touareg, has been invited to compete in the annual Race of Champions run from November 2 to 4.
De Villiers is set to line up alongside newly crowned F1 champion Jenson Button, eight-time Le Mans 24-hour winner Tom Kristensen, two-time Race of Champions winner and double DTM champion Mattias Ekström, and seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, China.
“I’m delighted to have been invited to this prestigious event,” said De Villiers.
“To be competing alongside most of the world’s best drivers is going to be a great honour and challenge that I’m sure I will never forget.
"It’s also an event that’s run for a great cause (raising funds for the Institute for Research on Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders) and I’m very happy to be associated with it,” he said.
Competitors in the Race of Champions, which was first staged in France in 1988, traditionally go head-to-head in identical cars ensuring the most talented driver (on the day) wins.
