Gauteng cans motorsport contracts

2010-03-08 14:13

The Gauteng economic development department has saved over R700 million by cancelling a motorsport contract, MEC Firoz Cachalia said on Monday.

"I wish to reiterate that the decisions taken on motorsport are aimed at ensuring that we channel all the available resources to our immediate priorities," he told a media briefing in Johannesburg.

The remaining two motorsport events for 2010 would, however, continue and be funded by the provincial government. The contract is scheduled to end in April.

Two events only

"In terms of the settlement agreement the provincial government would carry out its obligation to host two events already set down in the 2010 calendar."

The money has since been re-allocated to the provincial treasury.

Cachalia said all contracts were cancelled in an amicable manner to avoid legal action.

In the 2008/09 financial year the department spent R167 million on hosting rights for motorsport events and in 2009/10, R118 million was to be spent.

Although Cachalia did not suspect any corruption in procurement processes of the motorsports contract, a forensic investigation was being carried out in the department.

Benefits "inflated"

"I have no information before me which suggests any dishonesty... The forensic investigation is part of responding to recommendations and findings made by the Auditor-General and Scopa," he said.

He made it clear his predecessor, current Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile, might have erred in deciding to fund the sport.

"In retrospect I don't think it [motorsport funding] was a good decision. This raises questions about decision making processes... We will try and tighten up the process."

He said the benefits of the province hosting motorsport events were inflated and that less emphasis had been put on the price the province had to pay.

The Gauteng Motorsport Company dissolved and its duties in this year's events were handed to Blue IQ, a company involved in inner city regeneration. The company had already established a dedicated division to focus on the remaining events.

I used to be a motor sport fan, until the price of motoring got too expensive. I now dislike car manufactures and treat them with content and wish there was a decent public transport system...Boo hoo to motor sport, maybe the fat cats at the vehicle manufactures must sponsor these events!

Cachalia shows his ignorance of motorsport so you wonder how informed he is: Referring to A1GP he said "This contract has been terminated amicably. We will save approximately R125 million in total by not continuing with these events, taking into account the savings on licensing fees, hosting costs and event management costs." Perhaps no one told him the series has collapsed and I wonder who he met with to terminate it! Same applies to the BMW GP roadshow that was supposed to happen last year: "has also been terminated amicably" he stated, perhaps unaware that BMW pulled the plug on its F1 programme. I guess can spend whatever on the soccer as mentioned by JasonH but none on other sports.

SA Government corruption at its best. Billions upon billions are spent on the World Cup, but thats okay I guess.

Just one statement that worries a person: "The money has since been re-allocated to the provincial treasury" ...To be re-deployed to political, departmental, etc. fat-cats...

No, you didn't 'save' money, you just stopped wasting (some of) it.
