Ford finally returns to rallying

2010-02-15 11:20
In a major boost for local rallying Ford has announced a Fiesta S2000 will be piloted by Charl Wilken this season.

After a 10-year hiatus, Ford is back in the local rally fold and set to challenge Toyota and VW for line-honours.

Is your blood blue?

Boasting a proud rally heritage locally (54 event victories, two manufacturers’ titles and five drivers championships) Ford’s return should prove hugely popular with South African rallying fans.

“We are delighted that a national company of the stature of Basil Read has decided to join the ranks of sponsors of South African rallying,” said the president of the SA Rally Commission, Willie du Plessis, on hearing that Basil Read and Konica Minolta South Africa will back the return of Ford to the top class of local rallying with an all-new Fiesta S2000 for Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich.

Wilken’s driving pedigree is without question (13 local motorsport championships, including back-to-back production car titles) and paired with Godrich the duo has averaged a 70% win-to-start ration since 2004.

After Wilken lost two support crew (and his Subaru Impreza rally car) in a tragic accident en route to the Swartland rally in September last year, it was feared he might hang up his driving gloves and helmet.

Fortunately, this has proved not to be the case. His return to top flight rallying is keenly anticipated.
