Female rally pair in horror crash

EISENACH, Germany - German rally driver Janina Depping was treated for burns and a fractured arm due to a crash at the Wartburg Rally in Germany. Co-driver Ina Schaarshmidt was killed during the horror incident.

Schaarshmidt was pronounced dead at the crash while Depping was flown to a hospital.

The accident happened on the fifth stage of the rally between Steinbach and Brotterode in Thuringia when the Mitsubishi Evo 9 left the road. The rally was called off after the crash.

Depping and Schaarschmidt were regarded as Germany's best female rally team. Depping has been rallying since 1996 while Schaarschmidt, had been in the sport for four years.
