Peterhansel scoops Dakar stage two

CHAMPION Stephane Peterhansel overcame a 34-second overnight deficit to storm into the lead of the Dakar Rally as former winners Carlos Sainz and Nasser al-Attiyah fell off the pace.

Stephane Peterhansel, a ten-time champion on the world's toughest endurance race, took his Mini to victory during the second stage of the 2013 Dakar.

Peterhansel completed the 242km timed run and around Pisco, in 2hr35min38.

South Africa's Giniel De Villiers, another experienced Dakar campaigner in his Toyota, finished in second. French driver Ronan Chabot, in an SMG, was third, 3min52 off Peterhansel's pace.

First stage leader Carlos Sainz, the 2010 champion, endured a nightmare session, getting lost at the 75km mark and finished outside of the top ten.
