The latest teams to register for the 2012 Dakar held some surprises - one was the return of biker Johnny Campbell to race alongside Robby Gordon, another an ex-F1 driver who will be racing a truck.
With only a couple of weeks to go before the start of the 2012 Dakar Rally on January 1, 2012, the last uncertainties concerning drivers and teams have finally been decided.
American Robby Gordon, who recently announced the signing of Nasser Al Attiyah and Lucas Cruz to his team, has called on the services of Johnny Campbell, a biker finished eighth in his only Dakar in 2001 but will be making his debut as a co-driver in compatriot Gordon’s Hummer.
Campbell said: "I always said I'd come back to the Dakar to win when the opportunity came along. When Robby called me, I knew it was the right time."
FORMULA 1 ROOTS
Former F1 driver Jos Verstappen will reportedly contest the marathon desert race for the Xdakar team in a DAF truck alongside Charly Gotlib.
Meanwhile, another circuit racer, French biker Matt Lagrive has also planned his introduction to the desert for the Dakar 2012.
After obtaining his driving licence, Lagrive’s next step now is to learn how to read the road book and to ride on the rocky terrain and sand dunes the Dakar demands.
