The Dakar is not regarded as the world’s toughest race for nothing as the first three days of the 2013 rally proved.
Stage three, which started in Lima, Peru, on January 5 2013, took its toll on South African Dakar hopefuls.

SA off road champions Duncan Vos and Rob Howie have been forced to retire with a damaged roll cage after rolling their Toyota Hilux on special stage three between Pisco and Nazca in Peru.
TOO BADLY DAMAGED
Vos and Howie, who finished 10th overall in their first Dakar Rally in 2012, lost over an hour as a result of the crash but managed to finish 48th.
The pair officially placed 25th overall but after inspecting the damage, it was evident the roll cage was too badly damaged for Vos and Howie to continue the race.
Toyota team principal Glyn Hall said: “A very tough day for the team today. Sadly Duncan and Rob had an accident while trying to pass a truck.
"Unfortunately the roll cage has been damaged in a crucial area and for safety reasons we have unfortunately had to withdraw the car. Both Duncan and Rob are fine but obviously very sad that they are unable to continue.”
